Hello and welcome to my first VS post. It’s comparing 2 films to see which one out of the two is better. This concept was inspired by the youtube channel The Film Theorists Film Legends series, you can check that out here. Today I will be comparing Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Breakfast Club. Click those links to go to their singular reviews. Let’s see which film wins!

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off follows Ferris Bueller, Cameron Frye and Sloan Peterson as they all take a day off school to have fun around the city. Ferris’ sister Jeanie is hell bent on exposing her brother to their parents to show that he’s skipping school and the principal is also hell bent on exposing him to the students of the school.

The Breakfast Club is centred on 5 teens, all of them are from different groups. You’ve got the Brain, Athlete, Basket Case, Princess and criminal. The group are all stuck in detention together for the day. The group are all in there for different reasons that we find out over the course of the film.

The plots are very different but both heavily about school. Ferris Bueller’s Day off has a much clearer plot for each of the characters. While The Breakfast Club doesn’t really have a plot, they’re not trying to get out of detention but they’re trying to learn about each other and how they’re more alike then they originally thought.

Characters and their development and targeted audience

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off focuses on Ferris and Camerons friendship and puts it to the edge. The principal and sister’s reasons for caching Ferris are also quite fleshed out and have reasons for doing what they’re doing. The main character development comes from Cameron with how he deals with his father and how he’s going to stand up to him. Ferris breaks the fourth wall a lot and this is really interesting and funny to watch because it looks like he’s documenting what’s happening with Cameron and others. Even the side characters are funny. The guys who take Camerons dads car for a spin are quite funny and also the principals assistant brings a lot of laughs.

The Breakfast Club has more all around character story. The best part about The Breakfast Club is watching what makes the characters tick and their backstory. My favourite backstory out of all of them is Brian’s. Just how deep it is and how he was going to lose so much over one little thing. One thing all the characters have in common is their problems with their parents. This is a great way to relate to the teenage audience and it brings all the characters closer together. The chemistry between all the characters is awesome. You don’t expect some of the friendships that end up happening. One part I love is when they’re all talking and having a really good time together realise that they won’t be able to be friends because then their friends will see who they’re hanging out with and judge them, which is another thing that relates to the teenage audience, friendship groups and judgement. The assistant principal is looked at as a real mean person to all the characters, even he has his reasons for doing what he’s doing.

The Breakfast Club takes a much more personal, deep, realistic and relatable approach to their teenage characters to make them more appealing to the audience. Whereas Ferris Bueller’s Day Off offers a more overall experience to all ages.

Ferris Bueller’s Day off has a nice catchy soundtrack including songs like “Oh Yeah” and “Danke Schoen”

The Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club also has a nice soundtrack that includes songs like “Don’t You Forget About Me” and “we are not alone”

It’s nice how The Breakfast Club starts and ends with the same song and how the music is actually heard by the characters. In Ferris Bueller’s Day Off the music is used to make a moment better and it usually goes with it.

Pop Culture/Legacy

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

In the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off he makes a reference to James Bond and when the car guys are driving there’s a Star Wars reference. There was a tv series in the early 90’s called Ferris Bueller, Honestly I don’t see what the point of this was, they didn’t even bring Matthew Broderick back. In Deadpool there’s a parody of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’s end credit scene, dead pool even says “chicka chicka”. In the new Spider-Man film there’s going to be a homage to the chase scene. You can see a full list of all the references here.

The Breakfast Club

Ferris Bueller’s Day off has a reference to this film. The new Power Rangers film practically copies The Breakfast Club, they all meet in Saturday detention and are the same groups from this flick. It’s mentioned in Riverdale. For all the references and that click here.

Overall they’re both pretty loved by the community and well known.

After a lot of thinking and work i’m going to announce the winner…The Breakfast Club!!!! It was really hard to think of, But The Breakfast Club is a much more centred film and sticks with what is going on in the film. Tell me which one you thought won, do you agree with me or not? And why? Also leave a like or comment wether or not you liked what I did here. As I said this is testing and seeing how it goes. It might change over time.
